How to Rebalance Your Life
You miss events. You’re out of shape. You haven’t put your kids to bed in three nights and you secretly pray friends will cancel girl’s night so you can catch up on work or have a night at home. These are just a few signs your work-life balance isn’t balanced at all. Drawing boundaries and creating the harmony you need in your life is a big challenge with work, family, personal goals and relationships all vying for attention.
To begin getting your balance back, be intentional about what your priorities are. Write down the boundaries you’d like to have and begin to use them as a guide. For example, you might write “I will put my kids to bed Monday through Thursday without exception.” I will wake up early Monday, Wednesday and Friday to exercise and meditate.” Having a clear idea of what’s most important to you will be your north star.
Below are some other ideas to maximize your effectiveness to help create the space and time you need for finding your work-life balance.
When it comes to work, have a hard out. If you can’t do it every day, then at least three nights a week. This is particularly challenging for work-at-home business owners who tend to work 24-7.
Learn to delegate. Ask for help on things that others can do. Hire someone to help with time consuming chores, house cleaning, filing, or consider meal or grocery delivery services if shopping and cooking isn’t your priority.
Don’t allow distractions to add time to your day. Schedule the mission critical item first thing in the day and keep your phone off, door closed and get it done. Everything else will flow.
Never sacrifice sleep. It is a game of dominoes. If your sleep suffers, your mood suffers, your focus falters and you are less productive.
Multi-task. Walk during lunch and make calls to connect with friends or simply unplug and use that as your meditative mind refresh.
If you have a big commute, use that as personal growth time. Listen to podcasts, books on tape or learn a new language.
Keep your space clean and clear. The more organized you are, the less clutter in your mind and the better you’ll feel about walking out at the end of the day.
